I remember going to an event over 10 years ago about the law of attraction. “The Secret” had recently hit shelves and tv screens, and Bob Proctor was giving a talk on its wisdom. I remember feeling a mixture of inspiration towards what they had to share and doubt over the likelihood of what they were saying to be true. I was young and not fully aware of my wants and needs or who I truly was. I only understood the notion of the law of attraction on a superficial level – you want something, you put that energy into the universe, the universe responds to that energy and gives you what you want. Except, things don’t work quite so simply. There were so many things I wanted, why wasn’t I getting them?
The funny thing about the energy we put out, is that if we are not entirely in tune with that energy, we might be sending the universe mixed messages. For example, have you ever wanted something, but been afraid to ask for it “now” – so you say “maybe one day” or “I’ll take what I can get”? Or have you ever wanted something particularly in one area of your life, but put out conflicting energies in other parts of your life? Do you ever wonder why you attract the wrong energy?
As far as I’ve come to realise, in order for the universe to work with you, you’ve got to first work with yourself. Get to know the real you, your values, passions, the “why” behind your wants. When you live your life in line with your authentic self the energy you put out into the universe is unquestionable. The energy we attract from other people is also a reflection of the energy we give to ourselves – we set the bar for how others treat us by how we treat ourselves. We also waste a lot of unnecessary energy on negativity.
So where do we start? As with everything, I think things start with awareness. And they start with you. Not with all the things you want and don’t have, but with the root of your essence. Ask yourself the above questions and assess where in your life you might be sending the universe mixed messages. Grab a piece of paper or a journal and write out all the things you deeply desire. Write out all the areas where things aren’t working for you, and search for elements that might be blocking your path. In what ways is the energy you receive reflecting the energy you give to yourself? In what ways are you depleting valuable energy be focussing on the negative?
It’s easy to to say you want something and then complain when you don’t yet have it. It’s easy to place blame rather than look within. The trouble is easy doesn’t get you anywhere. The Law of Attraction works, but you need to work for it. You need to believe in it, and in yourself. Do the work. Do it now so you can reap the benefits for longer.
The life of your dreams, everything you would love to be, do or have, has always been closer to you than you knew, because the power to everything you want is inside of you. – Rhonda Byrne
